TFF: Tell us a little about yourself, your business and your mission.

HH:I live in Denver. I’m a mother and owner of a franchise called House of Colour. I purchased the franchise and launched the business in Denver in Summer 2019. House of Colour has operated for 30 years in the U.K. and for less than 10 in the U.S. My aim is simple: Help my clients cultivate confidence through color and style analysis.”

TFF: And for our readers, what exactly is the House of Colour?

TFF: WoW! I can really hear the passion in your voice. You said some pretty powerful things in your statments. What made you want to pursue a career as an Image Consultant?

HH: “Well, I discovered House of Colour after I had my 2nd child and celebrated my 40th birthday. My body had changed after years of pregnancy, nursing, and sleep deprivation. I was blessed with two healthy and happy children, but I also had new bags beneath my eyes and a closet full of ill-fitting and outdated clothing. I was attempting a “DIY” wardrobe redo when House of Colour found me. My experience was so positive and powerful that I wanted to share it!”


HH: “I realized that—despite a lifetime of dressing myself each day, and thousands of dollars spent on clothing—I really didn’t understand the best colors and shapes to suit my natural coloring, personality, and body architecture. That all changed, thanks to House of Colour.”

HH: “In my career, I’ve been blessed to work with and learn from some amazing business leaders. Among them were several powerhouse female CEOs. In reflecting back, most didn’t “Do it Yourself” with personal branding and style. They outsourced it entirely to experts. They made significant and ongoing investments in personal stylists and shoppers. This involved closet overhauls, expert tailoring, and lots of gorgeous and expensive new clothes on the regular. This was perfect for a CEO, but I wondered: could there be something out there for the rest of us?”

TFF: So how would you say Fashion has inspired you in your personal life as well as your career?

HH: “Learning about style inspired me to become an entrepreneur! I’m also inspired by these two quotes from Coco Chanel: “Beauty begins the moment you decide to be yourself; Dress shabbily and they remember the dress; dress impeccably and they remember the woman.” 

HH: “Unless they live in a nudist colony, everyone, everywhere, gets dressed every day! Your choices of clothing color and style can impact how you feel about yourself and how you are perceived by others. These choices can be a wonderful creative expression. BUT, they can also be very confusing and overwhelming! (as an example – The average American woman spends $150-400/month on clothing. That can add up to $3-4K a year. We are spending a lot. But, at the same time, Americans say they have nothing to wear! 61% of people regularly struggle to find something to wear. 28% of items go unworn. The average American spends 8 hours a month trying to find something to wear.”

TFF: So tell me something. How does the color we wear impact our every day lives and self esteem?

HH: “When you understand your best colors and styles, it reduces closet overwhelm and wasted time and money on clothing decisions. It also helps you become more visible, confident, and authentic!”

HH: THE COLORS WE WEAR MATTER.  Colors are either working for you – or against you.  They are having a positive effect or a negative one. This becomes even more apparent with age (and it’s what led me to House of Colour!) Wearing colors that coordinate with your personal coloring – your unique skin tone, eye and hair color, will make you look BRIGHTER, HEALTHIER, YOUNGER.  Conversely the wrong colors can make you look DULL, TIRED, or even ILL.

HH: “The Color Wheel (see picture above) we use a House of Colour was developed by Johannes Itten, a professor at the famous Bauhaus School of Art in Germany in the 1920s.  He was a true pioneer of color and is famous for this rendition of the color wheel. Itten divided colors in this way because he observed that all colors either have a YELLOW base to them (they are warm) or a BLUE base to them (they are cool) — except for TRUE RED, which sits in the middle of this color wheel. Itten also observed that all people have a personal coloring that places them in one of these four palettes based on their eye color, their natural hair color, and – most critically — the ‘undertone’ of their skin. That undertone is either COOL (blue-based) or WARM (yellow-based.) I know – people HATE being put into a box or getting a label – but there’s so much science behind this color theory, and so much CONFIDENCE that comes from knowing your best colors.”

TFF: That was certainly a lot to digest but very informative to our readers. I agree with you that Colors do in fact matter. Like you said, style is unique to the individual, but the formula we use to create our individual style has a direct impact on our every day lives, whether we know it or not. Which brings me to my final and closing question. Would you say that the way in which a person carries themselves, has a direct impact on how the world perceives them?

HH: “Absolutely! I have 20 years of experience in public relations and strategic communication, so I understand the power of communication. We are always connecting with others through the ideas we convey and the way we present ourselves.

HH: “I offer workshops on personal branding and professional dress, where I emphasize these 2 key points; “Appearance Matters: The Power of Non-Verbal Communication and Dress Well, Test Well: Clothing is Connected to Performance”

HH: “Studies have found that in any face-to-face encounter, 7% of a verbal message comes from the words used; 38% comes from the vocal tone, pacing, and inflection. And a whopping 55% is transmitted by the speaker’s appearance and body language. The good news? YOU are in control of how you portray yourself and your ideas. You can consider things like clothing color and style, hair and makeup, eye contact, handshake, facial expressions, posture, and other nonverbal communication. These external choices can help you communicate who you are on the inside.”

HH: “Your clothes and presentation communicate volumes about you as a person. What are you communicating intentionally or unconsciously? Your clothes tell a story about you. How do you want that story to read?”

HH: “Research shows that how you dress impacts how you think. A Columbia University study found that professional dress increases abstract thinking and gives people a broader perspective. When you get out of your yoga pants and into a professional pantsuit, you are turning on your problem solving or creativity button. We’ve all had the experience of feeling more motivated and focused when we’re dressed with intention.”
